LEGO Ideas' Ten Biggest Fan Sets, Ranked From 4,090 Parts Down
LEGO Ideas is the only theme where a fan, not an in-house team, gets the credit line. We pulled our full database of 94 Ideas sets and ranked the ten biggest by parts, from River Steamboat's 4,090 down to Pirates of Barracuda Bay's 2,545.

Ideas Is the Only Theme Where the Set Started as Someone's Living-Room Project
Every other theme in the catalogue starts with a brief from an internal design team. Ideas works the other way round. A fan builds something, submits it as a project, and if it gathers enough support and clears the review stages, the company turns it into an official set with a real box, real instructions and the original creator credited on the packaging. That is the entire pitch of the theme, and it is why the parts counts in this line behave so differently from everywhere else in the catalogue.
Our database currently holds 94 sets under LEGO Ideas and its predecessor CUUSOO, running from the first entry in 2011 through to 2026. The average across all 94 is 1,279 parts, which already tells you something: this is not a theme of small sets. But averages hide a lot. Some Ideas sets are 154-piece token builds, and a handful sit north of 3,500 parts. This guide is about that top end: the ten fan projects that ended up being the most ambitious builds the theme has ever produced, and what buying one of them actually means for your shelf, your evenings and your minifigure drawer.
The Theme Has Grown Every Year, and 2025 Was Its Biggest Release Year Yet
Look at the count of new Ideas sets by year and the trend is not subtle. The theme opened with a single set in 2011, added two in 2012, then settled into a slow trickle of three or four a year through the mid 2010s. From 2019 onward the pace roughly doubled: six sets that year, six in 2020, eight in 2021, nine in 2022, eight in 2023, ten in 2024, and then a record fourteen in 2025. Our database already lists ten sets for 2026, and the year is not over.
What that growth means for a collector is simple: there are now far more entry points into this theme than there were a decade ago, and far more competition among fan projects for shelf space and attention. It also means the biggest sets on this list are not evenly spread across the theme's history. Nine of our top ten giants were released between 2019 and 2025. Only Home Alone from 2021 and Grand Piano from 2020 predate the more recent flood of large-scale releases, and even they sit inside that same six-year window. The early 2010s simply did not produce sets at this scale.
The Ten Biggest Ideas Sets by Parts, Side by Side
Here is the full ranking, built directly from our part counts. This is the list to bookmark if someone asks you which fan-designed set is actually the biggest.
| Rank | Set | Year | Parts | Minifigures |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | River Steamboat (21356) | 2025 | 4,090 | 0 |
| 2 | Home Alone (21330) | 2021 | 3,955 | 5 |
| 3 | The Botanical Garden (21353) | 2024 | 3,792 | 12 |
| 4 | Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale (21348) | 2024 | 3,747 | 11 |
| 5 | Grand Piano (21323) | 2020 | 3,662 | 0 |
| 6 | Italian Riviera (21359) | 2025 | 3,252 | 10 |
| 7 | Tree House (21318) | 2019 | 3,037 | 4 |
| 8 | The Goonies (21363) | 2025 | 2,914 | 16 |
| 9 | The Globe (21332) | 2022 | 2,585 | 0 |
| 10 | Pirates of Barracuda Bay (21322) | 2020 | 2,545 | 10 |
Just outside this top ten sit The Orient Express Train at 2,544 parts and Table Football at 2,339, both close enough that a small production change could shuffle the bottom of this ranking in a future set. But the gap between rank ten and rank one is not small: about 1,500 parts separate Pirates of Barracuda Bay from River Steamboat, which is roughly the size of an entire mid-tier set on its own.
River Steamboat Is the Record Holder, and It Got There With Zero Minifigures
River Steamboat, released in 2025, is the biggest Ideas set our database has ever recorded at 4,090 parts. What stands out is that it carries no minifigures at all. Every one of those parts goes into the hull, the paddlewheel and the superstructure rather than into crew or passengers. That puts it in the same camp as Grand Piano and The Globe, two other giants on this list built as pure static models rather than playable scenes.
That distinction matters when you are deciding whether a big Ideas set is worth the space. A 4,090-part build with no figures is a display piece first and a build experience second: you are buying scale and detail, not a cast of characters to pose around it. It also explains part of why the piece count climbs so high. Without minifigure-scale rooms or vehicles to fill, every part goes toward the structure itself, which tends to push detail-heavy models like ships and instruments to the top of any parts ranking.
Our records also flag River Steamboat as already on the retiring list. If the scale of this build is what draws you in, that is worth knowing before you assume it will still be on shelves next year.
Home Alone and the Botanical Garden Show What Happens When You Add a Cast
Contrast River Steamboat with the next two entries and the theme's range becomes obvious. Home Alone, at 3,955 parts, recreates the McCallister house and comes with five minifigures: Kevin, Marv, Harry, Marley and Kate. The Botanical Garden, at 3,792 parts, goes further still with twelve minifigures, a mix of visitors, gardeners, a barista and a photographer populating a greenhouse scene.
These two sets prove that near-record part counts do not automatically mean a static display piece. Both are built as scenes you can populate and rearrange, not just structures to admire from the outside. That has a direct effect on build time and on what you get once the last piece is placed: a diorama with characters to pose, rather than a single fixed silhouette. If you enjoy minifigure-scale storytelling as much as the model itself, these two rank above River Steamboat and Grand Piano even though both sit lower on the raw parts table.
Worth flagging again: our database marks The Botanical Garden as being on the retiring list, same as the current record holder. Two of the theme's five biggest sets ever are already on their way out.
Red Dragon's Tale and The Goonies Prove Licensed Ideas Sets Lean Hardest Into Minifigures
Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale, 3,747 parts from 2024, ships with eleven minifigures covering a dwarf cleric, an elf wizard, a gnome fighter, an orc rogue, a trio of named adventurers, a myconid and several skeleton variants. The Goonies, at 2,914 parts and the smallest of our top ten by piece count, actually tops the entire list for minifigures with sixteen, covering the full film cast plus One-Eyed Willie and the Fratelli family.
The pattern here is consistent: licensed, narrative-driven Ideas projects tend to trade some raw part count for a much bigger cast. The Goonies proves you do not need to crack 3,000 parts to deliver the biggest figure lineup in the theme's history. If your priority is populating a shelf with characters rather than maximising the size of a single structure, The Goonies at rank eight beats every set ranked above it on that specific measure.
Grand Piano sits at the opposite extreme again here: 3,662 parts, fifth on the overall ranking, and zero minifigures, exactly like the record holder. It is also one of only two sets in this entire top ten with a 3D model available in our records, alongside Tree House, which suggests these two have had more digital documentation attention than the rest of the list.
Italian Riviera, Tree House and The Globe Fill Out the Middle of the Ranking
Italian Riviera, released in 2025 at 3,252 parts, comes with ten minifigures built around a coastal town scene: a gelato seller, a fisherman, tourists and kids. Tree House, from 2019 at 3,037 parts, is the oldest set in this top ten and carries four minifigures around its stacked-platform structure. The Globe, 2,585 parts from 2022, is another zero-minifigure entry, a pure geographic sculpture rather than a scene.
Tree House deserves a specific mention because of its age. Every other set in this ranking was released from 2020 onward, but this 2019 build has held its position in the top ten for six years running, through a period when the theme's yearly output has doubled. That is a reasonable proxy for staying power: newer, bigger releases have not managed to push it out of the ranking despite the flood of fresh Ideas sets since.
Pirates of Barracuda Bay closes out the list at 2,545 parts with ten minifigures split between the pirate crew and their skeleton counterparts, rounding out a top ten where six of the ten sets carry a populated cast and four are built as pure static structures.
Big Part Counts Do Not Automatically Mean Better Value for Your Shelf
Here is our reservation with chasing the top of this ranking purely by parts. A high part count tells you about build time and, roughly, about physical footprint. It tells you nothing about how interesting that build actually is scene to scene, and nothing about whether the finished model earns the space it takes up. Grand Piano and River Steamboat are genuinely impressive engineering exercises, but if you want characters to interact with once the build is done, a 2,914-part set like The Goonies with sixteen figures will give you more to do with it on a shelf than a static structure twice its size with none.
There is also a retirement problem specific to this theme's giants. Two of our top three, River Steamboat and The Botanical Garden, are already flagged as retiring in our records. Ideas sets do not get the long production runs of some other lines, and the biggest, most attention-grabbing entries seem no more protected from that than smaller ones. If a specific set on this list is the reason you are reading this, check its current availability before you assume it will still be around next quarter.
What the Rest of the Theme's 94 Sets Looks Like Beyond This Top Ten
It is easy to read a top-ten list and assume the whole theme runs at this scale. It does not. The average across all 94 sets in our database is 1,279 parts, well under a third of the record holder. The same release years that produced River Steamboat and Italian Riviera also produced far smaller companion sets: Disney Pixar Luxo Jr. at 613 parts and Mineral Collection at 880 parts both came out in 2025 alongside the 4,090-part record holder. Home Alone's own release year, 2021, also gave us the 189-part Vintage Car.
That spread is the real character of this theme: a small number of flagship, multi-thousand-part builds released alongside a much larger pool of modest, quick sets covering everything from vending machines to houseplants. If you are new to Ideas and the ten sets above feel intimidating, the theme has plenty of sub-1,000-part entries that carry the same fan-designed premise without the shelf commitment. The giants are the theme's headline act, not its typical release.
Our take
Taken as a group, this top ten is the best evidence you will find that LEGO Ideas rewards genuinely different kinds of ambition. Some fan designers chase scale for its own sake, and River Steamboat and Grand Piano are the proof: enormous, minifigure-free structures built to be looked at rather than played with. Others chase storytelling density, and Red Dragon's Tale and The Goonies show what that looks like when it works, packing a dozen-plus characters into a build that still ranks among the theme's largest. Our reservation is that part count alone is a poor way to shop this theme. Two of the three biggest sets ever made are already retiring, which means the ranking itself is a moving target, and a smaller, better-populated set like Pirates of Barracuda Bay or Italian Riviera will often earn more shelf attention than a bigger, emptier one. If you are choosing your first big Ideas purchase, decide first whether you want a sculpture or a scene, then use this ranking to pick inside that category rather than chasing the single highest number.

Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest LEGO Ideas set ever released?
According to our database, River Steamboat (set 21356), released in 2025, is the biggest LEGO Ideas set on record at 4,090 parts. It overtook Home Alone from 2021, which had held the record at 3,955 parts. Both sets are part of a theme where fan-submitted projects, not in-house design teams, originate the model.
How many LEGO Ideas sets exist in total?
Our database currently tracks 94 sets under LEGO Ideas and its earlier CUUSOO name, spanning from the theme's first release in 2011 through 2026. Yearly output has grown steadily, from a single set in 2011 to fourteen new sets in 2025, the theme's biggest release year so far.
Which large LEGO Ideas sets have the most minifigures?
The Goonies leads the theme's biggest sets for minifigure count with sixteen figures at 2,914 parts, ahead of The Botanical Garden's twelve and Red Dragon's Tale's eleven. By contrast, several of the largest sets by parts, including River Steamboat, Grand Piano and The Globe, ship with no minifigures at all.
Is LEGO Ideas River Steamboat still available to buy?
Our records currently flag River Steamboat as being on the retiring list, alongside The Botanical Garden. Both are among the three biggest Ideas sets ever produced, so their retirement status is worth checking before committing to either one, since availability for large Ideas releases tends not to last as long as for other themes.
Are the biggest LEGO Ideas sets worth buying over smaller ones?
It depends on what you want from the shelf. The largest sets like River Steamboat and Grand Piano are static showpieces with no minifigures, built for scale and detail. Sets like The Goonies or The Botanical Garden trade some part count for populated scenes with ten or more minifigures, which suit collectors who want a scene, not just a structure.
