LEGO McLaren sets compared: Technic, Speed Champions and more

Deep dive 10 min read By the Setobrick team

LEGO McLaren covers 24 sets in our database, from a 48-part promo car to a 3,893-piece Technic P1. Pick the McLaren P1 (42172) for display, the McLaren MCL39 F1 Car (42228) for the newest F1 build, and a Speed Champions car if you want something small and cheap.

An orange supercar and a white and red race car built from LEGO bricks sit on a wooden table by a window.

Twenty-four sets, one brand, three very different ways to buy

Our database holds 24 McLaren sets, running from 2015 to 2026. They split into five camps: Technic, Speed Champions, one Icons set, two Editions helmets and a City pack. A few polybags and promos fill the gaps.

The spread is wide. The largest is the McLaren P1 (42172) with 3,893 parts. The smallest listed is the McLaren F1 (6535388), a promotional piece with 48 parts. Between them sits almost every size a fan could want.

Prices below are launch retail prices as listed by Brickset, in dollars and pounds. They are not today's shelf prices, and we do not quote resale values. Sale dates also come from Brickset, and we use them as they are.

The McLaren P1 is the showpiece, and nothing else comes close

The McLaren P1 (42172) is a Technic set from 2024 with 3,893 parts and no minifigures. Launch retail price: $449.99 / £389.99. Brickset lists it on sale from August 2024 with no end date.

Next to it, the McLaren MCL39 F1 Car (42228) looks modest. It has 1,675 parts, about 2,200 fewer than the P1. That is a different kind of set altogether, not a smaller version of the same idea.

Buy the P1 if you want a road car on a shelf and you accept that it will dominate the shelf. Skip it if you want something you can finish in an evening, or if your budget stops well below its launch price.

Technic covers the whole range, from supercar to tiny racer

Technic is the most varied McLaren theme, and the most uneven. At the top: the McLaren P1 (42172) and the McLaren MCL39 F1 Car (42228), dated March 2026 with a launch retail price of $229.99 / £199.99. Brickset lists no end date for it.

One step down is the McLaren Formula 1 Team 2022 (First Edition) (42141), with 1,432 parts. It is about 240 parts smaller than the MCL39 and carries a launch price of $199.99 / £169.99. Brickset dates show its sale ended in December 2025, so the MCL39 is the easier F1 Technic to chase now.

The McLaren Senna GTR (42123) is the quiet bargain. It has 830 parts for a launch price of $49.99 / £44.99. Sales ran from January 2021 to December 2023, so it belongs to the earlier wave, but the ratio of parts to launch price is hard to beat among McLaren sets.

Then come the small racers. The NEOM McLaren Formula E Race Car (42169) has 452 parts and launched at $49.99 / £46.99. The NEOM McLaren Extreme E Race Car (42166) has 252 parts and launched at $26.99 / £20.99. Both sale windows ended in December 2025 according to Brickset.

The MP4/4 is the only McLaren set with a driver worth the shelf space

The McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna (10330) is an Icons set from 2024. It has 693 parts, one minifigure and a launch retail price of $79.99 / £69.99. Brickset lists it on sale from March 2024, with no end date.

It has fewer parts than the McLaren Senna GTR (42123), by about 140. Do not read that as weakness. The MP4/4 is a display model of a famous Formula 1 car with Senna himself alongside. Technic sets sell mechanics. This one sells history.

If you want one McLaren that explains why the name matters beyond the current grid, this is it. It is also the cleanest middle option: far smaller than the P1, far more serious than a Speed Champions car.

Speed Champions has the most McLarens, and the newest ones are the best entry point

Speed Champions is the longest-running McLaren line in our database, starting in 2015. The old sets are small and plain by today's standards: the McLaren P1 (75909) has 171 parts, and the McLaren 720S (75880) has 168. Both launched at $14.99 / £12.99, and Brickset dates show their sales ended in December 2016 and December 2018.

The McLaren Senna (75892) has 222 parts and the same launch price. The McLaren Elva (76902) has 266 parts and launched at $19.99 / £17.99. The McLaren Mercedes Pit Stop (75911) is the odd one: 340 parts, three minifigures, and a pit scene instead of a single car.

The best pair is the McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM (76918). It gives you two cars, two minifigures and 587 parts for $34.99 / £39.99. The pound figure is higher than the dollar one, which is rare among these sets. Brickset dates show sales ran from March 2023 to December 2024.

For current builds, look at two. The McLaren W1 (77257) is from 2026, has 294 parts, one minifigure and launched at $27.99 / £22.99. The McLaren F1 Team MCL38 Race Car (77251) has 269 parts and launched at $26.99 / £22.99. Brickset gives its end date as December 2026, which is only an announced end, so it has not passed yet.

Parts per set are not a quality score. The Senna GTR (42123) beats the 2026 helmets on launch price by a wide margin, but a helmet is a display object and a car is a build. Compare like with like.

The two Mastercard helmets are display pieces, not cars

The McLaren Mastercard F1 Team Oscar Piastri Helmet (43017) and the McLaren Mastercard F1 Team Lando Norris Helmet (43023) are both Editions sets from 2026. Each has 793 parts and one minifigure. Each launched at $89.99 / £79.99, and Brickset lists both on sale from June 2026 with no end date.

Their part counts are identical, so the choice is about the driver, not the build. Pick the one whose driver you follow. If you cannot decide, remember that they sit above the MP4/4 on launch price while having about 100 more parts.

These are for fans who want a driver on the shelf rather than a car. If you want a vehicle you can roll, look at the cars above.

The small stuff is fun, but only a few pieces are worth hunting

The cheapest McLarens are tiny. The McLaren Solus GT (30657) has 95 parts and launched at $4.99. The McLaren Formula 1 Car (30683) has 58 parts and the McLaren Elva (30343) has 86. Brickset lists no launch price for either, so we do not quote one. The McLaren F1 (6535388) has 48 parts and is a promotional piece, also with no price.

The McLaren P1 Logo (6535735) is a 178-part Technic piece from 2024. We have no launch price for it either. It is a curiosity rather than a core buy.

The F1 Driver with McLaren Race Car (60442) is a City set from 2025 with 86 parts and one minifigure. It launched at $12.99 / £10.99, and Brickset lists no end date. It sits apart from the collector sets above.

Match the set to the shelf, the budget and the mood

For a statement piece, buy the McLaren P1 (42172). For the newest Formula 1 car in Technic, buy the McLaren MCL39 F1 Car (42228). For a big, serious display on a smaller budget, the McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna (10330) is the one we would point to first.

For something fast and small, the McLaren W1 (77257) and the McLaren F1 Team MCL38 Race Car (77251) are the current Speed Champions options. If you want two cars at once, the McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM (76918) is still the best value in that range, provided you can find it, since its sale ended in December 2024 according to Brickset.

Chasing older sets is a different game. Anything whose Brickset sale dates have ended, such as the McLaren Senna GTR (42123) or the McLaren Formula 1 Team 2022 (First Edition) (42141), needs a patient search. We do not quote resale prices, and you should not assume they track the launch figures above.

Our take

The McLaren range is strong where it counts. The P1 is a proper flagship, the MCL39 is a credible F1 Technic, and the MP4/4 with Senna is the set that justifies the whole line. Speed Champions adds a steady stream of small, sensible cars.

The weak spots are the odd ones: the helmets are pricey for what they are, and the micro sets feel like footnotes. Still, if you pick one of the three headline sets, you will not feel short-changed.
